I have been sent a birth certificate which reads:
Registration District of Chorlton
1883 Birth in the sub district of Ardwick in the County of Lancaster
Entry 245 21st December 1882 at 10 Churchill Street, Openshaw U.S.D.
Florence a girl, Father Wilson Featherstone a joiner , mother Margaret Featherstone formerly Simpson. Informant M Feathertsone mother of 10 Churchill St, Openshaw, registered 16th January 1883.
Having found the Registration in the March of the following year, I went searching for a marriage of her parents, Looking for a marriage of a Wilson to a Margaret Simpson within 10 years of the birth of Florence, sure enough there is only one:
Civil Registration event: Marriage
Name: FEATHERSTON, Wilson
Registration District: York
County: Yorkshire
Year of Registration: 1877
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Spouse’s last name: Not available before 1912
Volume No: 9D
Page No: 56
MarriageFinder: Wilson Featherston married one of the following people
SIMPSON, Margaret Ann
VEAR, Betsey
PADGET, Arthur
Then I looked for a census entry in 1881 could not find one, but I think the Ardwick area of Manchester has problems with missing folio’s so I tried 1891 and found this,
1891 Census
Piece: 3213 Folio: 19 Page: 32
Registration District: Salford. Civil Parish: Broughton
Municipal Borough: Salford
Address: 51, Choir Street, Broughton, Salford, Lancashire
FEATHERSTONE, Wilson Head Married M 35 1856 Joiner Stanhope Durham
FEATHERSTONE, Mary A Wife Married F 31 1860 Crook Durham
FEATHERSTONE, Robert H Son M 13 1878 Scholar Kirkby Stephen Westmorland
FEATHERSTONE, John W Son M 10 1881 Scholar Manchester Lancashire
FEATHERSTONE, Florie Daughter F 8 1883 Scholar Manchester Lancashire
MCGREGOR, Catherine Lodger Single F 29 1862 Dressmaker Edinburgh Scotland
MCGREGOR, Minnie Lodger F 2 1889 Manchester Lancashire

Is this a miss transcription, it should be Margaret , not Mary, It is not it is written Mary A. but I cannot find either a death for Margaret or a Marriage to a Mary A.
Going the other way I could not find a Wilson in 1871, but in 1861 I find a Jacob Wilson, born in the right place, Stanhope:
RG09/3724 F28 Page 4, Cowshill Stanhope
Ralph Featherston Head aged 39 Marr Lead Miner Stanhope Durham
Elizabeth Featherston Wife aged 34 Marr Grocer Stanhope Durham
Dorothy Ann Featherston Daur aged 7 Scholar Stanhope Durham
Jacob Wilson Featherston Son aged 4 Stanhope Durham
Alfred R.A. Featherston Son aged 2 Stanhope Durham

and knowing that he had another name came up with:

1871 Census
RG number: RG10 Piece: 4949 Folio: 60 Page: 25
Registration District: Weardale. Sub District: St John
Enumeration District: 9. Civil Parish: Stanhope
Address: Cows Hill, Stanhope, Durham
FEATHERSTONE, Ralph Head M 49 1822 Grocer Stanhope County Durham
FEATHERSTONE, Elizabeth Wife F 44 1827 Stanhope County Durham
FEATHERSTONE, Elizabeth Daughter F 22 1849 Stanhope County Durham
FEATHERSTONE, John W Son M 21 1850 Stanhope County Durham
FEATHERSTONE, Dorothy A Daughter F 17 1854 Stanhope County Durham
FEATHERSTONE, Alfred R Son M 12 1859 Stanhope County Durham
FEATHERSTONE, Joseph A Son M 4 1867 Stanhope County Durham

So what happened to Jacob Wilson I cannot find him in any other census? Under Jacob or Wilson.

Robert Featherstonehaugh was born in 1835 in Appletreewick, Yorkshire, to Alexander and Elizabeth (Gibson) Featherstonhaugh (West Yorkshire Parish Records). In the 1841 and 1851 census he is living with his parents in Appletreewick.
In 1861 he is located in Manchester as a waiter living with a Publican and the census indicates he was married. It also indicates he was born in 1836, Appletreewick, Yorkshire.
In 1862 Robert Featherstonhaugh marries Caroline Priestley in Huddersfield, Yorkshire; his father is Alexander, and Robert is a spirit merchant. (Marriage certificate) They had four children, Elizabeth (Lilley), Polly, Jane and John Alexander as found in the various census. Polly died young and John Alexander at 20.
He seems to have vanished in the 1871 census for that area and the only possibility is an R Featherstonaugh(Ancestry spelling), West Derby…right age, servant, unmarried, but birthplace is Liverpool…this could be wrong of course. Caroline is still living in Huddersfield, as Head of the household.
In 1881 his wife Caroline is still in Huddersfield but it indicates she was deserted. There is a marriage in 1881 between Robert Featherstone and Harriet Gott, nee Woodcock, in Dewsbury, Yorkshire. The parish records say his father is Alexander. The census for that year includes the fact that Robert was born in 1842 and there was a son Frederick Woodcock, 11, and a daughter of 3 months, Jane Gott. Obviously, Frederick is not Robert’s. Harriet had married a George Gott in 1878 (FreeBMD) but her husband dies in 1878, so this Jane could not have been his. In later census she is down as Featherstone.
By this time Robert has dropped the ‘haugh’ from his name and it is just Featherstone.
The 1891 census has him living in Clifton, as a maltser, born Appletreewick in 1839, married; and Harriet is marked as Head in that census and with her children in Dewsbury. Caroline is still in Huddersfield married but also marked as head.
1901 census has Robert a widower, born Appletreewick in 1941, and an estate labourer living in Skipton by himself; Caroline is still in Huddersfield, living with her daughter Jane and Harriet is in Dewsbury living with her daughter Jane! (Robert had a sister Jane so presumably these daughters are named after her.)
Caroline dies in 1904 (FreeBMD). In 1911 Harriet is still in Dewsbury, and Robert, born 1836 in Appletreewick, is down as a widower and living in Skipton, with Eliza Watson, housekeeper. He is living 3 Carrs Yard, Skipton, Pensioned Gen.Labourer on Estate, born in Skipton, widower having had 2 children born 1 died. (Obviously incorrect)
It appears that Harriet died in 1918(FreeBMD) but Robert dies in the Skipton Workhouse in 1916, with his nephew Alexander Lister as informant (death certificate).
Now we have not been able to establish a marriage for him earlier than 1861; nor have we been able to establish another Robert Featherstone(haugh)’s birth in Appletreewick or Skipton for the right time. In the census his ages vary considerably, as does his marriage status. It is a well-known fact that the census have many errors, but trying to see through these problems, we think we have come up with the fact he was at least a bigamist!
(Note: there is another Robert Featherstonehaugh, his nephew, born in 1865 but we have traced him through various census, always marked single; he appears never to have married, and to have died in 1912.)
If anyone has further information regarding Robert, or his wives, we would be very interested in hearing it. It certainly has been fascinating digging out the details for this fellow!

We have a clue to John’s roots if his brother had a child called Maria born in 1857 at Staithes in Yorkshire.

I found this entry which I think is her in 1861

1861 Census
RG number: RG09 Piece: 3650 Folio: 79 Page: 9
Registration District: Whitby. Sub District: 3 Lythe
Enumeration District: 7. Civil Parish: Hinderwell
FEATHERSTONE, Maria Daughter F 4 1857 Staithes Yorkshire
MIDGLEY, Mary Ann Servant F 19 1842 House Servant Staithes Yorkshire

I cannot find a marriage for her parents Joseph & Maria in the indexes. The only entry in the 1841 census gives Joesph aged 15 living in another household probably as a servant with a family called Herbert.

What makes this interesting is that there are two incidences of the name John Borissow in the USA.

They Are Ellen 1901, Matilda, 1893, and Maurice 1897.

I have found births and death registrations for Matilda and Maurice, problem being that Matilda’s falls in the same quarter as one of the children Florrie.
Anybody see if there are baptisms for any or all, it could have been twins. This would pick up maybe which are and are not the deceased children, one of the most difficult things to prove without baptisms.

The 1891 census, below shows Eliza Featherstone as the sister of John Brearly. Tracing back John Brearley’s tree gave me the possible surnames of Piper and Brearly. I can’t find Eliza Brearley or Eliza Piper on the 1871 or 1881 census, nor in the birth registration indexes. I’ve found no marriage of a Brearley or a Piper to a Featherstone. I thought maybe she married someone else before marrying a Featherstone

Subject: Eliza Ann Massey

Dear Paul,

As you know, our possible point of contact has been my relative John Robert Brearley apparently with a married sister Eliza Ann Featherstone and her son Lionel as recorded in the 1891 Census. They are shown living at 72 Pimlico Road in Belgravia where he is a grocers manager. The 1911 Census for this property indicates a shop with three rooms over including a kitchen.
I am confident this John Brearley is my relative since his details are a close match but doubted that he and Eliza Ann were blood relatives. I have recently made contact with Eliza’s grandson, Tony Harris, and he has confirmed that they were not related.
The basic details that I have recently established are as follows -
During the 1881 Census Eliza Ann Massey from Rotherhithe was a servant to E Henry Harris – an analyst and assayer at 81 Queens Square Bloomsbury. RG11/337/22/pp39&40.
In 1883 they were married in Southwark under the assumed name of Featherstone, but the subsequent census returns record them at separate addresses with Eleazer using his correct surname and shown as single.
Lionel was born in 1888 with his baptism record indicating the family home at 72 Pimlico Road.
Eleazer Henry Harris was the only son of Aaron Harris and Sarah Barnett of Bishopsgate. Eleazer lost his father in 1869 and essentially became the head of the family. He had four sisters who did not marry. Eliza Ann’s parents were Joseph Massey and Charlotte Stratton.
The probate information for Eliza Ann Featherstone is cross-referenced with the name Harris, which enabled me to make the connection with Eleazer Harris.
It’s clear that Eliza Ann is not the daughter of John Pimlott Brearley – my great-grandfather – and his second ‘wife’ Mary Ann Piper as shown on your tree and, it would appear, not a Featherstone.

Now some questions
Is it possible that Edward Henry was the illegitimate son of Edward Henry, and was named after his mother and/or later accepted as the child of her husband and hence took his surname.
Does anyone have a copy of his birth certificate?

I have a member of my own tree where he took his mothers name, his father was not on the birth certificate, but was on his marriage certificate. Which threw me for a loop for a time.

That is the only explanation I can come up with- I cannot see why they should take an assumed name. I wonder if John Edward the father left a will, that might answer some questions.

I have a marriage certificate for Ellen Featherstone(31) to Francis (29) Hall a Station Porter father was Robert Hall a Drill Instructor. Ellen’s Father is Philip (deceased) a builder date 3rd Nov 1894 in
St Elisabeth’s Church Reddish, Stockport.
I cannot find her on the census of 1871,1881, 1891 with a father called Philip. and not one after where they would both be together.
I am not going to look at all the possible Hall deaths would take too long.
